Privacy Policy
How AfriCard collects, uses, and protects your information when you trade gift cards in our app or visit our website.
Key points at a glance
- We collect only what we need to run the service — account details, identity verification, and trade records.
- We never sell your personal information or share it for third-party advertising.
- Identity documents are verified through secure partners and stored with encryption.
- You can request access, correction, or deletion of your data at any time at support@africardex.com.
1. Overview
AfriCard (“AfriCard”, “we”, “us”) operates a mobile application and the website at www.africardex.com that lets users exchange unused gift cards for cash, paid straight to their bank account.
This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we use and protect it, and the choices you have. It applies to everyone who downloads, installs, or uses the AfriCard app, and to visitors of our website. By using AfriCard, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
2. Information We Collect
Account information
When you create an account, we collect your name, email address, phone number, and password.
Identity verification (KYC)
Gift card trading is regulated. To comply with anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorism-financing rules, we are required to verify the identity of every trader. Through our identity-verification partner we collect:
- A government-issued identity document (image and document number);
- A selfie, used for a one-time liveness and face match against your document;
- Your date of birth and residential address;
- Verification results and status from our verification provider.
Transaction information
We process the gift cards you submit for trade — including the card brand, stated value, and card codes — together with your trade history, the rates applied, payout records, and any dispute details.
Payout information
To pay you, we collect your bank name, account number, and account holder name.
Device and usage information
We automatically collect your device model, operating system and version, app version, language, IP address, device identifiers, in-app events, and crash or performance logs.
Communications
If you contact support, we keep the content of your messages and our replies, so we can help you and improve the service.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Create and manage your account;
- Verify your identity and screen trades against fraud and sanctions watchlists;
- Price, process, and settle your gift card trades and pay earnings to your bank account;
- Provide customer support and respond to your requests;
- Detect, prevent, and investigate fraud, abuse, and unauthorized transactions;
- Measure and improve app performance, reliability, and features;
- Send service messages such as trade status updates and security notices;
- Send marketing messages, only where you have opted in — you can opt out at any time;
- Comply with our legal and regulatory obligations, including record-keeping.
4. Legal Bases for Processing
Where the law requires a legal basis, we rely on:
- Performance of a contract — to operate your account and process your trades;
- Legal obligation — for identity verification, anti-money-laundering checks, tax, and record-keeping;
- Legitimate interests — to secure our platform, prevent fraud, and improve the service;
- Consent — for marketing messages and optional analytics, which you may withdraw at any time.
6. Data Retention
We keep personal information only as long as we need it for the purposes described in this policy, or as required by law:
- Account and profile data — while your account is active;
- Identity-verification records — up to five years after account closure, as required by anti-money-laundering rules;
- Transaction and payout records — for the period required by financial and tax regulations;
- Support communications — up to 24 months;
- Analytics and logs — up to 24 months in aggregated or de-identified form.
When data is no longer needed and we are not legally required to keep it, we delete or anonymize it.
7. Data Security
We protect your information with technical and organizational measures, including encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest for sensitive documents, role-based access controls, and continuous monitoring of our systems. Access to personal data is limited to team members and providers who need it to do their jobs.
No system is completely secure. If you use AfriCard, keep your password confidential and contact us immediately at support@africardex.com if you believe your account has been compromised. If a data breach affects you, we will notify you and the relevant regulator as required by law.
8. Your Rights and Choices
Depending on where you live, you may have some or all of the following rights:
- Access — get a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
- Correction — fix inaccurate or incomplete data;
- Deletion — ask us to delete data we are not legally required to keep;
- Restriction and objection — limit or object to certain processing;
- Portability — receive your data in a machine-readable format;
- Withdraw consent — for processing based on consent, such as marketing.
To exercise any of these rights, use the in-app settings or email support@africardex.com. We respond within 30 days and never discriminate against you for making a request.
Nigeria (NDPA 2023): you may lodge a complaint with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission. EEA/UK (GDPR): you may complain to your local supervisory authority. California (CCPA/CPRA): you have the right to know, delete, and correct your personal information; we do not sell or share personal information as defined by these laws.
9. Children's Privacy
AfriCard is intended for adults only. You must be at least 18 years old to create an account and trade gift cards. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it promptly.
10. International Data Transfers
Our service providers may process data in countries other than your own, where data-protection rules may differ. When we transfer personal information internationally, we use recognized safeguards — such as standard contractual clauses — and take additional measures where required, so your data receives a consistent level of protection.
11. Cookies and Similar Technologies
Our website uses cookies and local storage for essential functions (such as keeping the site secure and remembering your preferences) and for aggregate analytics that help us understand how the site is used. The app uses device identifiers for analytics, security, and fraud prevention.
You can control cookies through your browser settings; blocking essential cookies may affect how the website works.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Effective” date at the top of this page shows when it was last revised. If we make material changes, we will notify you in the app or by email before the changes take effect. Continued use of AfriCard after an update means you accept the revised policy.
